The Bakersfield American Indian Health Project (BAIHP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native individuals and families residing in Kern County. Established in 1997 and funded by the Indian Health Service, BAIHP serves as the only Indian health care facility in the region, representing more than 220 tribes nationwide. The program provides culturally responsive care that respects Tribal affiliations, personal values, and spiritual traditions, fostering an environment of dignity and inclusion.
BAIHP offers a comprehensive range of services designed to address the diverse physical, emotional, and social needs of the Native community. These include behavioral health programs, medical case management, diabetes prevention and treatment, nutrition counseling, and pharmacy support. The Behavioral Health Department provides compassionate mental health services that may include anger management counseling to help individuals learn healthy coping strategies, strengthen emotional regulation, and improve relationships. These services are tailored to honor cultural perspectives while promoting healing, balance, and self-awareness.
In addition to clinical care, BAIHP focuses on holistic wellness through its Youth Prevention Program, transportation assistance, and educational initiatives. The organization’s commitment extends beyond healthcare—it strives to empower individuals and families through prevention, education, and community connection. By integrating traditional values with modern practices, BAIHP continues to be a trusted resource promoting wellness, resilience, and respect across Kern County’s Native communities.
