Dr. John E. Coumbe-Lilley is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he also serves as Program Director for the Performance, Exercise, and Sports Psychology master’s concentration. As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Associate Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Coumbe-Lilley integrates his expertise in psychology, sports performance, and emotional recovery to help individuals manage stress, frustration, and anger in both personal and professional settings. His work often explores how athletes and high-performing individuals can rebuild emotional resilience following severe or catastrophic injuries, emphasizing the importance of mental health and anger management as part of recovery and performance enhancement.

With a diverse background that includes playing and coaching international rugby, and working across Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Cups, and other elite events, Dr. Coumbe-Lilley brings a global and experiential perspective to his teaching and counseling. His leadership as Co-Director of the Applied Sports Psychology and Injury Research and Education Lab (ASPIRE) provides students and clients with evidence-based strategies for emotional regulation, motivation, and performance improvement.

Recognized for his excellence in education and mentorship, Dr. Coumbe-Lilley has received numerous awards, including the Teaching Excellence Award from the Association of Applied Sports Psychology and multiple Educator of the Year honors from UIC. His academic and professional accomplishments underscore his commitment to helping individuals harness their emotions—particularly anger—into constructive energy that supports healing, growth, and sustained success.
