Youth & Family Services is a community-focused organization dedicated to supporting children, youth, and families from the prenatal stage through the teen years. Serving more than 14,000 children and families annually, the organization provides comprehensive programs throughout Rapid City and every county in western South Dakota. Its work is rooted in the belief that strong families and healthy development create a stronger community, and every program reflects a commitment to care, education, prevention, and empowerment.
Youth & Family Services offers a wide range of programs designed to meet families where they are and support them through every stage of growth. Early childhood initiatives, including high-quality Head Start options, promote school readiness and healthy development for young children. School-age and teen programs foster confidence, leadership, and positive decision-making, while nutrition and special projects address essential needs that impact overall well-being. Through its Counseling Center and Family Support and Advocacy Services, Youth & Family Services helps children and families navigate emotional, behavioral, and life challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
A strong emphasis is placed on prevention, emotional wellness, and skill-building, including strategies that support healthy communication, self-control, and constructive responses to stress and conflict. These services can be especially valuable for youth and families working to manage anger, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen relationships at home and in the community. Programs encourage kindness, empathy, and accountability, helping participants develop healthier ways to cope with strong emotions and everyday pressures.
