Day Treatment

The North Carolina Day Treatment Program provides a structured, intensive level of care for individuals managing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This daytime, non-residential program is designed to offer clinical support, therapy, and recovery tools while allowing participants to maintain community and family involvement.

Day Treatment programs in North Carolina are licensed and regulated through the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services (DMH/DD/SAS) and are often used as part of court-mandated treatment plans, aftercare support, or diversion programs.

Core components of NC Day Treatment include:

  • Comprehensive substance use and behavioral health assessment
  • Daily group therapy and individual counseling sessions
  • Life skills training and relapse prevention strategies
  • Substance use education grounded in evidence-based curricula
  • Medication management, if needed
  • Family involvement and case coordination

Day Treatment programs typically operate five days a week for several hours each day and may last for several weeks or months depending on clinical need and legal requirements.

This level of care is appropriate for:

  • Individuals stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment
  • Participants in DWI or drug court programs
  • Clients with moderate to severe substance use concerns
  • Individuals requiring structured support without full-time residential care

Upon successful completion of the Day Treatment program, individuals often transition to outpatient therapy, support groups, or continuing care plans to maintain long-term recovery.

Certified NC Day Treatment providers can be found through Online Class Advisor’s North Carolina Treatment Directory. Each provider will assist in determining program length, eligibility, and coordination with legal or DMV requirements.
